First Meeting of 2010

Iredell Photography Club kicked off 2010 with its first meeting of the year on Monday, Jan. 11, with 10 members present. We met in the computer classroom in the MCC Workforce and Technology Building. The business session was brief and included discussion of upcoming exhibit opportunities in Mooresville as well as the Downtown Art Crawl which will be held on Friday, March 13. Club dues run on the calendar year and are now payable. See Club Treasurer Ted Templeton on that.

An excellent program was given by Kevin Speaks and addressed many aspects of our website, including possible changes to update the design and layout of the home page. Several other websites were visited as examples of ideas we may want to adopt. We also discussed reviving the use of this Blog to post news items and photos of club events and activities. Google maps were added to the Meetings page to make us easier to find. And finally, Kevin demonstrated how to create or reply to a topic and post images in the Forum section of the website. Several members made their first posts to the forum during the meeting.

Next meeting will be on Jan. 25, at our regular location in room 19C. See you there.

Run for Excellence '07

When I'm not posting to the club forums, I'm running with my gang, check us out. We are loose affillation of runners that regularly meet at the local YMCA for cardio training. We try to keep each other up-to-date on the latest race announcements.

Full Moon

Full Moon names date back to Native Americans, of what is now the northern and eastern United States. Those tribes of a few hundred years ago kept track of the seasons by giving distinctive names to each recurring full Moon. Their names were applied to the entire month in which each occurred.
There were some variations in the Moon names, but in general the same ones were current throughout the Algonquin tribes from New England on west to Lake Superior. European settlers followed their own customs and created some of their own names. Since the lunar ("synodic") month is roughly 29.5 days in length on average, the dates of the full Moon shift from year to year.
Jan. 3, 8:57 a.m. EST - The Full Wolf Moon. Amid the zero cold and deep snows of midwinter, the wolf packs howled hungrily outside Indian villages. It was also known as the Old Moon or the "Moon After Yule."

Parkway

I recently spent some time on the Blue Ridge Parkway. I drove from Wilkesboro over to Elkin taking in the "Crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains" section of North Carolina. Along the way, I found some pretty unique places.
This is the Brinegar Cabin. Carolyn Brinegar's weaving loom is the oldest one still in use in these mountains and can be seen at the cabin.

Glassmine Falls

Best viewed in the spring when water is more plentiful, the Falls are very narrow the rest of the summer. It occasionally dries up completely. You can view the falls from Glassmine Falls Overlook at milepost 361.1. Look across the valley to locate the Falls. Although the stream of water is narrow, the sign says it is 800' high, some sources say 200', but you should be able to see it easily even from this distance.
It's a thin sliver of water cascading down a bare rock outcropping where a Mica mine once was. You can still barely make out the mine entrance to the bottom right side of the rock face.
I took this photo on 10-20-06 around 5 p.m. The temperature had dropped to about 50° and the wind was blowing strong. I was using my 70-200mm lens at 200mm in order to get all I could in the picture.

Bridle Veil Falls

This shot was taken mid afternoon with the sun shining on the falls. Highway 64 used to run underneath the falls. There is a good place to pull off the road so that you can photograph the falls. This waterfall is located on Highway 64 west of Highlands NC.

Whitewater Falls

I took this shot on 10-20-06 around 12:00. The best time to photograph this falls is usually from 11:00 a.m. to 2 p.m. After 2 p.m., the left side starts going into shade and this causes too much contrast for me. This falls is located on Highway 281 between Cashiers and Highlands, NC. Very easy to get to, about a 1/4 mile walk on pavement..

Looking Glass Falls

Looking Glass Falls... I took this photo early on 10-20-06 after a night of hard rain. Everything was very wet and dangerously slippery that morning. I find that this shot is best taken before 10 A.M. unless it is overcast. This falls is located on Highway 276 out from Brevard, NC.

This shot of Linn Cove Viaduct was taken from Edgemont Road off of Highway 221. I used my 18-70 Nikon lens for this shot, along with a polarizer filter. There is a lot of color here, but I feel sure it will be gone the following weekend. Wayne

Cullasaja River Gorge

I took this picture on 10-15-06 at about 9:00 a.m. The sun comes up over the trees around 10:00 a.m. I didn't want to contend with blown out highlights, so this is best taken before 10:00 a.m. unless it is overcast. My exposure was f22 @ 6 seconds. I used a polarizer filter to darken the water somewhat. I needed at least a 1 second exposure to obtain the effect I wanted in the water. I used a 70-200 f2.8 VR Nikon lens. Wayne

Hutchinson Home with Dogwood

I find myself in the state park based on an enormous rock. Stone Mountain State Park in Roaring Gap, North Carolina. I was out looking for the fall colors and maybe a little exercise. I believe I was a week or two early on this trip. The leaves were still all green for the most part. But this is the only weekend I had open for the color changing.

I appreciate the nice comments about taking two place awards in the Wilkesboro Photography Exhibition but did notice something that was not mentioned.
Wayne Wrights also had 5 photographs excepted and hanging and took three place awards.

Spider Man wins photo show in Wilkes County

Charles Tilley, alias “Spider Man”, known throughout the IPC circle for his outstanding photographs of spiders and insects, won a first and second place in the 27th Annual Blue Ridge Overview Juried Competition and Exhibition this past weekend. There were approximately 300 entries with only 78 making the exhibit. Charles had 5 photographs accepted in the show. Congratulations Charles.

October Meeting

Jim Rossi will give the program for this month--digital slide presentation from a recent trip to Italy.
Also remember that this is our last meeting before the November ehibit at the Arts Depot in Mooresville.
I (Rachel) will be bringing a "Gunmetal" frame so that you all can see the color...incase you decide that you don't want to use "Black frames".

Oak Island North Carolina

I went to Oak Island this weekend for a little saltwater fishing and of course, the digital camera went along for the excursion. This is one of my favorites shots for the beautiful abode, the fair carolina skies and the rippled reflections of the inlet waters.

This fleet of huge shrimping boats were in Varnamtown.

Is it a new prototype bazooka with a short barrel?? Looks like he is getting something out of his ammunition bag. What kind of tricks will he be able to pull when he is down 20,000 troops to 1?? Wait a minute; I believe his secret weapon is a new Nikon D200. Nobody, nobody, not even 20,000 blue coats is a match for that. He can shoot a whole bunch without stopping to reload. I smell victory in the air……..

Hey Guys: These are some of the women who will be "re-enacting" at Ft. Allison (Allison's Woods) this weekend. This picture was taken on Confederate Memorial Day, about 10:30 in the morning at 4th Creek Cemetery in Downtown Statesville. It was gray scaled, then a Quadtone was added for the Sepia look.

It Didn't Save Me Any Money

I found a Brown Lizard in an old tree stump this afternoon. With the weather a little cool today, he wasn't moving so well. The warmth of my hand was a strange but welcome remedy for this odd summer chill.

You can see he's looking at me... maybe he's thinking, "Mmm, Dinner!" Unfortunately, by the grace of millions of years of evolution, he'll just have to be content standing guard over our blog. Or, maybe he's just here to sell insurance. Makes you think...

Fine Art Show in Salisbury, NC

Arts Council of Henderson County

The Arts Council of Henderson County announces the opening reception for their upcoming exhibit, “Figurative Characters,” Friday, September 1, 2006 from 5:30- 7:00 pm. Both the opening reception and the exhibit are free and open to the public.
Many of the renowned regional figurative and doll artists and sculptors who are exhibiting may be in attendance, such as Jennifer Hastings, Charlie Patricolo, Cindy Billingsley, Razi Bradley, Gabe Cyr, Zoya Dubrovsky, Annie Hesse, Bill Hickman, and Lesley Keeble, among others.
The exhibit seeks to entertain the public, while educating that the boundaries of traditional doll making and figurative art are evolving into art forms with a much broader audience. This exhibit is intended for everyone, not just young people, doll lovers, or art collectors. A wide variety of media from fiber to photography to steel will be employed.
The exhibit runs through October 28, during gallery hours of Tuesday through Friday from 1:00 pm- 5:00 pm and Saturday from 1:00 pm- 4:00 pm.

The 27th Annual Blue Ridge Overview Juried Photographic Competition and Exhibit will be held at the Wilkes Art Gallery from October 6 to November 11, 2006. The exhibit is open to all photographers whose primary source of income is not photography. The opening reception and awards program will be held on Friday, October 6 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30p.m at the Gallery. Over $1000.00 in cash awards will be presented in the following five categories: Landscape, Flora/Fauna, Architecture/Design, People, and Photographer’s Choice/Open. Awards are first, second, and third prizes as well as honorable mentions. The Ralph H. Marler, Jr. Best-In-Show award will also be presented. Over 100 works from photographers across North Carolina were accepted for exhibition in the 2005 Blue Ridge Overview. The exhibit generated an enormous response from the community and attendance was very high at the gallery during the exhibit month Entries for the Blue Ridge Overview Competition will be accepted at Wilkes Art Gallery on Thursday, September 28 and Friday, September 29 from 10:00a.m. to 4:00p.m. or on Saturday, September 30 from 10:00a.m. to 1:00p.m. Entrants must use the official BRO 2005 entry forms, meet eligibility requirements, and works must comply with all specifications. Pillowtex Plant 1

Pillowtex Plant 1 in Kannapolis, NC, smokestacks implosion set at 9 a.m. Thursday. The best location to view is across the railroad tracks at Ridge Avenue. Masks are available for those who wish to watch the smokestacks fall.

Gem Theather

I was out photographing last weekend, and the gate guard informed me that they was going to move the Gem Theather which will probably mean they will tear the existing structure down. This will be another icon lost due to new construction. I have not heard of a date yet. We need to photograph it before it is lost. If I hear of a date, I will let you know.

Photoshop Elements Class

I will be teaching an introductory class on Photoshop Elements 4.0 in August at Mitchell Community College. The class will meet on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 9:30, and will begin on August 8th and end on August 31st. Cost is $55. plus textbook.

Registration begiins on August 7th, which is cutting it very close!

Hi! I am Chuck and this is my first post. Many thanks to Rachel for starting this blog for our members. I look forward to using it as a great communication tool for IPC.

Most of the members were at the meeting last night, but for those who weren't, we took our first steps toward mastering the club's new cold mount press. I think we got the hang of it pretty well after a couple of attempts. Thanks,also, to all the members who brought materials in for us to experiment with.

I want to encourage members to register and use the blog. Let us know what projects you are working on, ask for advice, offer advice or tutorials.....most anything at all.

July 15th (All day) Love Valley will be staging a Photo / Art event on Saturday, July 15th. Cowboys, cowgirls and horses will be available to pose for photos, sketches, etc. The Love Valley website lists the time of the event as "All Day".

This is the new Iredell Photography Club website. I am Rachel, and will be a regular poster to the site, though the other members will also be able to post here as they wish.
On this site you will find links to various photography links, galleries by members and information concerning the club. We hope that you will join the Iredell Photography Club whenever you like.
